Goodyear Welted Masters
Shoes made to last over time Goodyear welted shoes are made by following a rigorously handcrafted technique that requires 216 steps by taking about eight weeks to make a single pair. The upper and the insole are sewn together by our craftsmen thanks to a leather strip, called ”welt”, to which the outsole is subsequently sewn. The space between the insole and the sole would be filled with cork. This process requires only natural materials, such as cork, leather and waxed cotton threads to create an extremely durable, soft and water-repellent shoe which is easy to be resoled without damaging the upper.
Design
Crafted by GabrieleAll our projects are entirely designed and made in Italy that come to life by starting from a handmade wooden last: from here Gabriele created a cardboard model that will become the base to develop the prototype of each shoe. In this primordial phase, we are able to have an idea of the final result.
Cutting
Crafted by MaurizioThrough Maurizio’s careful and precise hands, the best leathers are selected and then cut by a metal blade that is slid along the edge of the cardboard previously created by Gabriele. For the mass production and the development of many sizes, we have implemented CAD, an automated software, that guarantees greater flexibility and precision.
Sewing
Crafted by LetiziaSewing technicians are also artists. After having skived the edges and uniformed the thickness of the leather with automated skiving machines, Letizia sews the lining and upper by hand with cotton threads. This phase is still carried out manually today because the hand joint allows the leather to be straightened in order to give it the necessary curvature, called “springing” in jargon, to cover the shape on which the models of those designed patterns.
Lasting
Crafted by GermanoThe soul and style of the finished product are increasingly evident in this stage, thanks to Germano's expert hands that put together the work previously done by his colleagues. Germano covers the last with the previously softened upper, fixes it with nails to a leather insole and stretches it with pincers in order to make the pattern adhere perfectly to the last.
Goodyear Welted Stitching
Crafted by FlavioGermano passes the task to Flavio who sews up the upper and insole, thanks to a strip of leather, called “welt”, to which the sole is sewn at a later time: an artisan sewing technique called “Goodyear Welted”. A 6 mm thick cork filling is inserted into the space created between the insole and the sole: a natural, insulating and moldable material that adapts perfectly to the arch of who wears the shoes.
Sole stitching
Crafted by FaustoAnother sewing master: Fausto! The sole is sewn with the Rapid technique to the leather welt, where the upper and insole were previously sewn, and the heel is then nailed. The combination of the two seams, one horizontal Goodyear welted and the other vertical Rapid over the sole, confer characteristics such as durability and waterproofing of the bottom and possibly be resoled over the years. Normally the sole chosen is in leather, natural rubber, stabilized rubber or in a combination of these materials.
Finishing
Crafted by OmarThe outer edges of the sole are refined with steel cutters in order to bring them to the right shape and to remove excess materials. An operation that, only if done by hand, allows for flawless alignment between the shape and the perimeter of the sole. In each step, the dexterity of our craftsmen is essential and it is also important to perform carefully.
Re-finishing
Crafted by LuigiAfter trimming the sole, it's time to colour it! Luigi takes care of it by using special colors based on the material. At this stage, brand marks are stamped on the sole and on the upper, to give an identity to the product and certify the materials. All the clean cuts still uncovered are dyed and polished with vegetal wax.
Packaging
Crafted by Beatrice and CarlaLast but not least. The last quality check is carried out by Beatrice and Carla who package and label the product after assuring the quality of each shoe.
